Magical Christmas adventures in Cornwall for the whole family

From elves making magic deep in a Winter Wood, to festive steam trains, from mermaids and the Mousehole Cat lit up and glimmering over Cornish fishing harbours to enchanting illuminated night gardens, there are lots of really magical Christmas adventures in Cornwall that the whole family will love.  Here are a few of our favourites…

Rogue Theatre’s Winter Wood

Each year the very talented team at Rogue Theatre enchant adults and children alike with their wonderful Winter Wood experience. Follow a trail through the woods near Tehidy and discover elves telling fascinating stories, mysterious lights in the woods and gather round olf Father Time as he tells tales that make Christmas feel really magical. And then head on to the marquee in the woods where a wonderful play, aimed at both children and adults is performed, all the while you can enjoy hot chocolate, mulled wine and minced pies and children can enjoy Christmas crafts.

Tickets released soon and they go like hotcakes!

Heligan’s Night Garden

Once again this year the beautiful Lost Garden’s of Heligan near Mevagissey and a short distance from Bosinver will be lit up in collaboration with the Liverpool Lantern Company. These lights, set around a 1.5 mile accessible trail through the gardes, celebrate the wonderful array of flora and fauna which inhabits the gardens. Last year, Nanny Pat and her whole family were enchanted by the tableaux of foxes, badgers, frogs, robins, squirrels and hedgehogs, all carefully placed in the areas they are known to inhabit.

You can explore at your own pace and enjoy toast marshmallows and roast chestnuts and discover the glittering oak tree. It’s a really magical evening and perfect for nature lovers at Christmas.

Tickets are £14 for adults and £7 for children, carers go free and some discounts are available.

The Mousehole Lights

The famous Christmas lights over Mousehole harbour in Cornwall

The imaginative and iconic Christmas lights around Mousehole Harbour were cancelled this year, but 2021 will see them once again light up the waters edging Mount’s Bay. To avoid crowds this year there will be a ‘Soft Switch On’ whereby the various displays in and around the village will be lit as and when they are ready.  It is anticipated that all displays will be completed and lit by mid-December. The volunteers and team are keen to raise money to keep this wonderful display going.

Santa Special train at the Bodmin and Wenford Railway

Santa special train at the Bodmin & Wenford steam railway

Another popular Christmas event for families is the Santa train run by Bodmin & Wenford Railway which is once again making a return this year. Visitors to the station will be greeted by Santa’s elves, before boarding the steam train to Bodmin Parkway. Whilst aboard the train children can write their list to Santa before returning back to Bodmin General where they can deliver it in person to Santa in his unique Victorian coach. Each child will receive an age-appropriate gift and the opportunity to have their photo taken with Santa and there are also Christmas activities to enjoy. Grown-ups can enjoy the festive ride through the Cornish countryside too and you can book food such as pasties or Christmas cream teas to take on the train in advance.

Santa Specials will be running on 4th, 5th, 11th, 12th, and 17th-24th December and tickets cost from £15 per adult, from £18.95 per child or from £65 for a family of four.
