Every year at Bosinver we choose a charity to support which is close to our hearts. There is always a rationale for linking with the chosen charity – perhaps a personal connection or because we have been moved by the story for example of a local person or disaster relief situation. When our guests make a booking they have an option to make a voluntary donation to that charity too. We are always amazed how many of you choose to opt in and we are so grateful for your kindness.
So far over the last few years the charities we have donated to have included:
Shelterbox – first response team for disaster relief with their headquarters here in Cornwall
Cornwall Air Ambulance – a charity providing a helicopter emergency response in our county
Little Harbour Childrens’s Hospice – providing a home from home for families with life-limited children
People and Gardens CIC – a local plant nursery providing opportunities for people with disabilities
Coppafeel! – the UK’s only youth-focused breast cancer charity – our support was inspired by the loss of a lovely local girl
Macmillan Cancer Support (for whom Pat did a 15 mile Mighty Hike in August 2024) – providing advice and specialist cancer nurses working in the community
Emmaus UK – a charity working to end homelessness and social exclusion
Cornwall Hospice Care – providing free compassionate specialized end of life care
This coming year our chosen charity will be the RNLI – the charity that saves lives at sea. Despite its vital role in maritime safety and search and rescue operations, many people don’t realise that the RNLI does not receive direct government funding for its day-to-day operations. Cornwall is surrounded by sea and living by the coast we see the brave lifeboat crews and lifeguards in action almost every day. In 2024 alone across the UK and Ireland the charity’s lifeboats were launched 9,141 times, saving 437 lives.
In an ideal world, charities wouldn’t need to exist – one where no child went hungry or suffered abuse, no animals were harmed, all diseases could be treated and everyone was treated kindly, with opportunity to thrive. Unfortunately this Utopia is a dream for most people and in the meantime those of us who can afford it must help charities to work towards creating a society that benefits everyone.
So this Christmas may we urge you to consider making a charity donation (perhaps instead of sending cards as we have) – whether it be because you are moved by the plight of a loved one or someone known to you, a desire to help those less fortunate than yourself or the wish to make a difference in this world – your donation will truly be appreciated.
Thanks for reading this blog post – we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy and healthy New Year from all at Bosinver!
