We had great fun doing our own ‘Pickathon’ at Boddington’s strawberry farm this weekend. The forecast wasn’t brilliant – possible heavy thundery showers and I was looking for an outdoor entertainment for myself and three grandchildren when I spotted the PYO advert.
We all love fruit and what better than luscious strawberries fresh from the field?
Pre booking was required via Simply book from the business website www.boddingtonsberries.co.uk You book a 30 minute session for each person for £8, pay in advance online and bring your own containers..You can pick as much fruit as you want in that allotted time period.
I made the booking only an hour before we arrived and the strawberry patch and parking were well signposted. The strawberries were in long rows in a polytunnel, at the end of which were spectacular views over Mevagissey and out to sea.
We were on a mission. We all selected a row, I checked my watch and called out ‘Ready, steady, Pick’ and we were off!
The children were amazed at the colour and size of the strawberries and how loaded the plants were. Oh and the gorgeous smell…
We managed to fill all our containers and were rewarded with as many as we could comfortably eat before we got back in the car to deliver them to Mum’s and Nan’s house to be dealt with.
Charlie made strawberry cake, strawberry syrup and strawberry liqueur. I made strawberry conserve and froze some in quantities suitable for smoothie making in the winter – and delivered lots to super grateful friends and neighbours.
It was a fabulous way to spend a morning and enjoyed by all. I think it was terrific value too so it will on our hit list of things to do in June next year.
