Discovering 42; Cornwall’s Interactive Science Museum

An interactive Science museum in Bodmin? Gasp of incredulity from me when a friend told me about this place. I like to think I’ve got my finger on the pulse with activities and attractions in Cornwall but this one passed me by.

So, some investigative work was scheduled and I looked them up and arranged a visit with my grandchildren, aged 15;11 and 10. The wooden building housing the exhibition nestles in Priory Park and there is easy parking nearby. I would allow an hour to 90 minutes to go around the exhibits and maybe add a magic mocktail in the café before you leave – my lot were spellbound with the chemical experiment mixing in their production.

The exhibition was the brainchild of Roy and Natalia Jones who set about developing interesting interactive objects made from recycled materials which demonstrate scientific principles. They used local artists for the construction and Cornwall Scrapstore provided many useful resources -all saved from landfill.

It’s a one way system to view the exhibits, all designed to demonstrate a particular science. Our favourites were the magnetic marble run, mining for minerals in mobile phones and the bike powered record player. Exhibits change regularly so we will be making a return visit – we didn’t realise science could be so much fun!

Discovering42.co.uk and Facebook and Instagram Booking is done in time slots on the website so plenty of time to try everything! I would say kids 7+ to gain the most from it.
