Many of our returning guests who are used to seeing me bobbing around the office are asking this question so I thought I’d write a post to keep you all updated. Basically, I’m taking late retirement! At 77 I’m well over retiring age but when you have created a business from scratch it’s hard to let go. However, my declining hearing has meant that I can no longer hear well enough to answer the telephone or manage the reception desk without appearing stupid or rude!
There have been many articles written about the impact of hearing loss on your daily life and suffice it to say that it has been a painful journey to miss out on everyday chit chat and friendly conversation with guests in the office and around the farm. Basically your world shrinks – TV has to have subtitles, meals out with family and friends in busy restaurants are a hearing nightmare, and daily life consists of ‘cracking a code’ – piecing bits of heard conversations together to try and make sense of the words, which is mentally exhausting!
I have been wearing hearing aids since my early fifties and have been upping their strength as my hearing declined. Now I have maximum strength ones and am on the waiting list for a cochlear implant, whenever that might be!
Please don’t think that this is a moan or complaint of any kind, it’s a statement of fact and I am exceedingly lucky that the rest of me is perfectly fit and well – it just means I’m less able to communicate easily.
The good news is that we have a remarkable team running Bosinver and I know that I have left it in safe hands. Just this week we won Gold for the best Self Catering of the Year at the national 2026 VisitEngland Awards – and it doesn’t get much better than that! The award really belongs to every single member of our wonderful team. Bosinver is what it is because of the people behind it — the care, warmth, hard work and attention to detail they bring every day is what creates such special experiences for our guests. I am enormously grateful to them all.
I will still be around in the background, spinning the odd plate or two but the plan is to bumble around in my campervan, walk my dog, tend to the garden and catch up with old friends around the country while I still can.
I shall miss the hustle and bustle of seeing you all but am looking forward to embracing this new chapter of my life. No doubt some blogs will be forthcoming …….
Best wishes and love to you all,
Nanny Pat x
