Outdoor Play

When was the last time you played outside?

We believe outdoor play is really important โ€“ whatever age you are! Weโ€™re lucky enough to have our own woodland, lake and fields to play in right here, so we want to encourage everyone who stays with us to unleash their inner child, reconnect with each other, and experience nature first hand. And thatโ€™s just the beginning โ€“ we hope that the things that you discover when youโ€™re at Bosinver will inspire you to go and explore your local area when you return home.

Wild Kids

Weโ€™ve set up our Wild Kids Club to help families get the most out of the natural environment during their stay. From toasting marshmallows on a campfire, to pond dipping and building dens, there are all sorts of outdoor activities on offer.

Whatโ€™s happening with children and nature?

When you think back to your own childhood, chances are some of your best memories involve climbing trees, building dens, dams or forts and creating your own adventures in the woods. Remember the excitement you felt when you caught a glimpse of a kingfisher darting along the river bank, watched tadpoles gradually growing into frogs or discovered egg shells in the wood and knew that it meant that somewhere a nest of chicks had hatched.

Children today might be able to tell you all about the Amazon, Antarctica, or the Sahara. But can they identify the trees that grow in our woodland or tell a crow from a jackdaw? Nature is something you need to experience, not just read about in a book or watch on a TV documentary.

American author Richard Louv believes that that todayโ€™s kids are suffering from what he calls โ€˜nature deficit disorderโ€™ โ€“ a lack of connection with the great outdoors. His bestselling book, Last Child in the Forest explores what happens to both individuals and society when children do not develop that bond with the natural world created by outdoor play.

The National Trust has found that kids today spend 60% less time outdoors than their parents did โ€“ a big difference in a generation! They want to help people reconnect with the nature and their Outdoor Nation campaign aims to get families out experiencing our glorious countryside as much as possible.

Outdoor play

The Love Outdoor Play movement run by Play England is gathering momentum in the UK. Their aim is to try and raise awareness about the importance of outdoor play and encourage people to get outdoors and play wherever they can.

You can find resources and information in our outdoor play resources pdf โ€“ or search for #outdoorplay on Twitter to keep up to date with the latest news.
